Agrani Bank PLC – A Brief History

Agrani Bank became a Nationalized Commercial Bank after the Bangladesh Banks (Nationalization) Order 1972 through President’s Order No. 26 of 1972. Under this order, former Habib Bank Limited and Commerce Bank Limited were named as Agrani Bank. It was subsequently incorporated as a state-owned Commercial Bank under the Companies Act 1994 on 17 May 2007. Agrani Bank PLC took over the going concern business, assets, liabilities, rights, and obligations of Agrani Bank under a vendor’s agreement dated 15 November 2007, between the Government of Bangladesh, represented by the Ministry of Finance, and the Board of Directors of ABL, with effect from 01 July 2007.

Agrani Bank PLC is managed by a Board of Directors. This board consists of a chairman and 5 directors, along with the Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer. The Managing Director receives support from Deputy Managing Directors and General Managers. The bank has Circle offices numbering 11, zonal offices numbering 53, and divisions in its head office numbering 37. ABL has opened 978 branches. This includes 36 corporate branches and 43 authorized dealer branches which are scattered in different areas. ABL is also at the very fore in the use of technology, with all its branches offering real-time online banking. We have five subsidiaries-a merchant bank, a financing company for small and medium-sized businesses, and a remittance house-which are based in Singapore, Malaysia, and Canada.

Agrani Bank PLC is the first state-owned commercial bank in Bangladesh to introduce Agent Banking. Presently, ABL has 567 agent booths facilitating Agent Banking services in the rural areas of Bangladesh. Agrani Bank PLC has been operating an Islamic Banking system through its ‘Islamic Banking Unit’ since February 28, 2010. At present, 60 windows are handling the Islamic banking system. Agrani Bank PLC is committed to serving the nation.
