BRAC Bank PLC – A Brief History

BRAC Bank PLC was initiated to provide banking assistance to Small and Medium Entrepreneurs who do not have banks. It drew inspiration from its parent group BRAC, which is the largest NGO in the world. BRAC Bank provided microcredit to small and medium businesses to facilitate grass-roots entrepreneurs in accessing formal banking services. Close to half of the lending portfolio is comprised of small and medium enterprises – popularly known as the ‘SME’.

BRAC Bank was different when it started its journey in 2001, unlike any other regular banks. The leaders of the bank realized that this SME sector, which was previously neglected, is vital for growth and employment generation for the country.

Over the last couple of decades, traditional banks were unwilling to invest in this sector. At a time when it was almost impossible for SME entrepreneurs to get financing from the banking sector in Bangladesh, BRAC Bank came forward and stepped into financing these unbanked SME entrepreneurs.

It is the only member from Bangladesh in the Global Alliance for Banking on Values, GABV. The GABV has 70 financial institutions from 45 different countries. These institutions are operating in Asia, Africa, Australia, Latin America, North America, and Europe and serve more than 60 million customers while managing up to USD 200 billion in total assets supported by 80,000 workers. BRAC Bank shares the 3P Philosophy with other partners of GABV: People, Planet, and Prosperity.
