Dutch-Bangla Bank PLC – A Brief History

Dutch-Bangla Bank was the first joint venture bank to begin operation in Bangladesh. Local shareholders under the leading of M Sahabuddin Ahmed, founder chairman along with the Dutch company FMO formed the bank.

The bank, since its inauguration, has given priority to financing fast-growing manufacturing industries in Bangladesh, because the manufacturing sector sends Bangladeshi products to the rest of the world. As such, funding and concentrating on this sector enables Bangladesh to meet its growth objectives. Another priority of Dutch Bangla Bank is Corporate Social Responsibility. Even though today, CSR has become a clich, Dutch Bangla Bank leads the frontline in this area and labels its efforts as ‘social responsibility’. Because of the investment in this area, the Dutch Bangla Bank obtained leading donor and the biggest bank donor status in Bangladesh. The bank got many international awards for its especial manner of being the socially responsible bank.

Dutch Bangla Bank is the first fully automated bank in Bangladesh. The Electronic-Banking Division started in the year 2002 to quickly utilize technology and provide modern banking services. Full automation finished in 2003 and introduced plastic money to many people in Bangladesh. Dutch Bangla Bank also operates the biggest ATM network in the country, and it has greatly reduced costs and fees for consumers by 80%. Also, many critics were surprised to see that Dutch Bangla Bank chose low profitability path for this sector. Dutch Bangla Bank had focused on mass automation in banking as a CSR activity and never aimed to make money from this sector. Because of this, it offers unmatched banking technology services to all its customers today.

Because of this fact, most the local banks have joined the banking of Dutch Bangla Bank rather than initiating their own. The investors that buy and sell stocks in various companies have always remained optimistic about the future, despite record-breaking investments in technology and even more colossal donations. In 2008, the stock of Dutch-Bangla Bank reached an all-time high share price on the Dhaka Stock Exchange.
