Global Islami Bank PLC – A Brief History

Nobody can live in isolation and flourish in this global village. Modern technology and foreign policy have brought the peoples of the world closer to each other than at any time in history. Today, this earth has become a global village. Communication among people today takes place in a way and at a speed never witnessed before. Connectivity has become crucial in this rapidly changing world. Therefore, Bangladesh also cannot live in isolation in this fast-growing village.

Keeping these in mind, Bangladesh Bank approved nine banks as fourth-generation banks in which three banks have the funding of Non-Resident Bangladeshi (NRB) people. This bank is one of those three banks to materialize the dream of the people having the goal to keep Bangladesh well connected with other advanced nations. It is the brainchild of 25 well-reputed visionary Non-Resident Bangladeshi (NRB) people residing in different countries of the world.

After almost three years of untiring effort and conforming to all the rules and regulations by the regulatory body, final approval was granted on July 25, 2013, to commence banking operations in Bangladesh. The dream thus visualized by those NRBs has started taking a concrete shape piece by piece. Presently, its Corporate Head Office and Gulshan Corporate Branch are located at Saiham Tower, 34 Gulshan Avenue, Gulshan-1, Dhaka 1212-an excellent postmodern architectural illustration and one of the best buildings in Bangladesh.

Mr. Nizam Chowdhury is the founder Chairman of this bank having long professional experience for about 03 decades in the U.S.A, and other Directors are well reputed in their own sectors of profession. These nice personalities have well-defined mission and vision. Their mission is not to restrict the Bank to a particular group of people but to bring huge unbanked people under banking. Its vision is to make the Bank truly global: to provide world-class services quite literally on a global scale.

This is a major milestone for the bank in its operation to be the first amongst all fourth-generation banks to be licensed for operating Islamic Banking along with its conventional banking operation. Later on, the Bank received permission from Bangladesh Bank to transform its conventional banking operation into a fully fledged Islami Bank, enabling it to offer all sorts of Islamic Banking operations under the guidance of Islamic Shariah. With this, the name of the bank was changed to “Global Islami Bank Limited” instead of “NRB Global Bank Limited”.
