Janata Bank PLC – A Brief History

With the emergence of Bangladesh as an independent, sovereign state in 1971, after a devastating nine-month war against the West Pakistani occupation army, a war full of blood and tears, trauma and pain of millions of our dear ones, the legacy of rebuilding the already shattered financial base of the country was felt as an urgent call of the day against a collapsed economic condition of a newly born state.

The steps to rebuild this country’s economy included making a combination of several banks that used to operate in this area and creating new banks. An effort to that direction shaped Janata Bank in 1972. It was formed by amalgamating the old United Bank Limited and Union Bank Limited under Banks Nationalization Order (President’s Order No. 26) of 1972.

On 15 November 2007, Janata Bank was registered with the Joint Stock of Registrars and became a public limited company with the name Janata Bank PLC.

Headquartered in Janata Bhaban, which is located in Motijheel C/A, at the heart of the capital city of Dhaka, Janata Bank has branches in the United Arab Emirates and a great number of branches in Bangladesh. This bank has a huge number of staff members.
