Sonali Bank PLC – A Brief History

Sonali Bank PLC is the largest commercial bank owned by state in Bangladesh. According to the Bangladesh Bank Nationalization Order 1972 and Presidential Ordinance No-26, 1972, Sonali Bank was established with amalgamation of National Bank of Pakistan, Bank of Bahawalpur and Premier Bank. With the view to making banking activities more dynamic by improving the management skills and service quality, the company was registered under the name “Sonali Bank Limited” on June 03, 2007 in the Directorate of Registrar of Joint Capital Companies and Firms, and Bangladesh Bank issued a banking license in favor of Sonali Bank Limited on June 5, 2007. After execution of “Vendor Agreement” between Government of People’s Republic of Bangladesh and Sonali Bank Limited, Sonali Bank Limited started banking operations as a company from 15th November, 2007.

Besides increasing the business in the industry, the business of merchant banking was started from 14th September 2009 through the creation of a subsidiary company named “Sonali Investment Limited” with the intention of persuading the country’s vast masses to invest and creating proper economic development.

Islamic banking activities based on Shariah were started in Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, Khulna, and Bogra from 29 June 2010 through the Islamic Banking Window. Besides, the responsibility of corporate social responsibility is being fulfilled through the formation of “Sonali Foundation”.

Currently, the number of branches of Sonali Bank PLC is 1232. Of them, 1230 are located inside the country and 2 abroad. Out of 1,230 branches within the country, 695 branches are in rural areas and the rest 535 in urban areas. Out of all the branches, foreign trade activities are conducted through 48 branches. Authorized Dealer or AD Branches out of total 2 abroad: 1 in Kolkata and 1 in Siliguri, West Bengal, India.

It has 18 General Manager’s Offices and 69 Principal Offices for smooth implementation of the administrative and business activities of the Bank. The general activities of the bank are being managed through its 47 head office departments. Sonali Bank has about 2.47 crore customer accounts of various types.

There is no alternative to training to bring skills to bank officers and employees. To provide training there is 1 training institute each in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Bogra, and Mymensingh along with “Sonali Bank Staff College” in Dhaka.

A wholly-owned subsidiary company, Sonali Exchange Company Inc.-SEKI-, was established in the United States of America in 1994 with the objective to expand the operation of Sonali Bank PLC in the international banking arena. The Bank has so far financed 9 branches for the above exchange company. Sonali Bank (UK) Ltd. started functioning in the United Kingdom, effective 2001, under the joint ownership of Sonali Bank PLC and the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. Currently, it has 6 branches in the UK.

The Bank has also its representative offices at Riyadh and Jeddah, State of Kuwait, Saudi Arabia.

Remittances of Bangladeshi workers working in Malaysia are coming to the country with the cooperation of Sonali Bank PLC through Malaysian ‘May Bank’ and IME (M), SDN, BHD. Although having no account number in any branch, WESTERN UNION, IME, TRANSFAST, EXPRESS MONEY remittances are paid by SPOT CASH, CASH OVER THE COUNTER method and remittances of other banks / EXCHANGE HOUSE.

Sonali Bank has a remittance business with 80 banks/exchange houses of various countries including the Middle East. The foreign trade activities of the bank are being conducted through 48 authorized branches of the bank and 617 foreign correspondents in different countries of the world for foreign trade.

A huge force of skilled manpower is available in banks. Development of bank business with this manpower and acceleration of the economic activities of the country is one of our goals. The total number of officers and employees in Sonali Bank PLC is 18,115 at present. Among them, the number of officers is 17,030 and the number of employees is 1085.

Sonali Bank plc has been working in all fields to improve the socio-economic condition of Bangladesh. Various deposit products have been introduced to encourage the public to save. It has been providing support to the people of cities and rural areas through various loan schemes including agricultural and industrial project loans, import-export loans, small business loans, agricultural loans, SME loans and consumer goods loans. Sonali Bank carries out the routine banking activities of the people at large along with government treasury activities on behalf of the government in those areas where Bangladesh Bank does not have branches. Pension and retirement allowance to public and private officers and employees; salary and allowance to the officers and employees of public and private schools, colleges, madrasas, etc., scholarships to students, various allowances related to social security, purchase and sale of government savings bonds have been supporting the community through social activities including payment of purchase bills, receipt of bills from various service institutions, revenue collection activities of government, Hajj, and Zakat fund collection.
