Standard Chartered Bank – A Brief History

Standard Chartered Bank first opened its doors in Bangladesh back in 1948, in Chattogram – the port city of the nation and a major trading hub. In August of 2000, when SCB acquired Grindlays Bank, it inherited a presence in Bangladesh dating all the way back to 1905. SCB has acquired American Express Bank’s business in 2006. The bank has been a proud partner in the progress of developing Bangladesh.

Standard Chartered is the only multinational Bank in Bangladesh, with over 119 years of operational presence. Today, the bank has 18 branches nationwide that cater to key economic centres. SCB’s presence is the most extensive in comparison with other foreign financial institutions operating in the market.

It has also earned the distinction of being a pace-setter in the market for many firsts in innovations as the longest established bank in the country. SCB was the first international bank to extend credit lines to an independent Bangladesh; open the first external letter of credit (LC) in 1972. In Bangladesh, Standard Chartered is a first digital bank to introduce the first ATM; launch the first debit card, credit card, international debit card, and Shariah-compliant credit card; inaugurate the first 24-hour help center; launch the first state-of-the-art Online Banking Platform; and facilitate the first cross border acquisition.

Standard Chartered Bangladesh has continued its pioneering streak with a number of ‘firsts’ for the country: these include a partnership with MetLife to become the first multinational bank in Bangladesh to offer bancassurance products to clients; transmission of the first end-to-end digital cross-border Letter of Credit; completion of the first automated over-the-weekend loan disbursement; launch of new and original digital learning tools; bespoke industry-first solutions executed for clients; and several community engagement and sustainability initiatives toward being here for good. Standard Chartered Saadiq has the distinction of being Bangladesh’s only international Islamic banking proposition for both retail and corporate clients.
